The Apple iPad: A Quick Guide to Help You Decide Whether or Not to Buy

Posted on Thursday 9 February 2012

While some are debating the merits of the iPad, discussing whether the iPad marks a revolutionary change in computing, and wondering if Steve Jobs’ assessment of the iPad is accurate or hyperbole, many people just want to know if they should buy one.

What’s the big deal about the iPad?

The iPad is a radical shift in the current computer paradigm. Designed as a slate, the iPad design is like removing the keyboard from your clamshell style notebook and using just the monitor. If you remember not-so-fondly the tablet PCs – no worries – the iPad is radically different – some call it a “game changer.” Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs, believes keyboards, mice, and other standard user interfaces are outmoded. Apple is rethinking how we use computers. Files and folders, originally based on their physical counterparts, are scrapped in lieu of a very fast, intuitive, user touch interface.

All this talk of paradigm shifts and the future of personal computing, while interesting, neglects the here and now. Does anyone really need an iPad right now? “With iPad, which fits somewhere between phone and computer, Apple must convince people who already have smart phones, laptops, e-book readers, set-top boxes and home broadband connections that they need another device that serves many of the same purposes.”1

Should you buy an iPad now, later, or never?

What to consider before buying an iPad

1. iPad navigation happens via the iPad screen (like on the iPhone) rather than via mouse. You can type, but by touching the keys on a keyboard graphic displayed on the tablet rather than using a physical keyboard. Some have complained that the iPad touch screen keyboard is difficult to use.

2. The iPad was designed for multimedia – if you want to read, play games, surf the Internet, check e-mails, and download and watch movies, the iPad provides an excellent interface. If you need to produce what is read – write a blog, write a long e-mail, create a spreadsheet, then the iPad comes up short.

3. If you need iPad apps, tunes, or books, you’ll be married to Apple since a your purchases will go through Apple’s app store. But with 1,000 apps and counting, who cares? Google will care. The monopolistic all apps in one Apple basket may provoke the ire of Google, which is poised as a major iPad competitor.

4. You might want to wait until you see what the competition is up to. Google is releasing Chrome-based “netbooks” with tablets to follow. Google’s Chrome operating system is designed to eliminate onboard storage and apps in lieu of Web-based everything. The folks at Google portend the imminent death of desktop applications and bet users will use the Web for their apps, their data storage, the whole shebang.

5. The iPad improves on Kindle. The Kindle e-reader is black and white and displays text in only portrait mode. The iPad does color, switches from portrait to landscape as you rotate the slate, and frees you from the Amazon.com only book purchase venue.

6. Web sites are adapting since the iPad doesn’t support Flash. HTML5 code fixes that issue. While you may have some sites under construction as they change their code, lack of Flash won’t be an issue for long.

7. Apple offer two versions of the iPad: iPads that start at $499 and connect to the Internet using only Wi-Fi, and iPads that also have a cellular data connection ($130 more plus whatever your cell phone plan will charge you monthly for data service). At $829, the most expensive iPad’s price exceeds many notebooks. If you need the Internet wherever you roam, you’ll want to spend the extra $130. If you are content with making use of Wi-Fi hotspots or your home or office Ipad Sales Tool
wireless network then the lower cost iPad will suit you. Of course, like all new gadgets, if you wait a while, the price will fall.

8. In addition to the already mentioned on-screen keyboard frustration, initial iPad user complaints also include lack of a camera, lack of media storage cards, and lack of USB ports. The iPad comes as is, with no expansion slots and no ability to add peripherals. The iPad is not Windows so you can’t run multiple programs at the same time. To browse the Internet, you’ll use Apple’s Safari browser which doesn’t support Flash video. Some users found the iPad, at almost twice the weight of a Kindle, heavy after a few minutes. If you want full iPad specs, Apple provides them here.

To buy or not to buy. That is the question.

The decision to buy an iPad comes down to knowing what the iPad will and will not do, and then determining whether the iPad’s functionality meets your current needs. Or, if you are one of the lucky folks who can afford to buy all new gadgets as they come on the market, more power to you and please let me know what you think of the iPad.

Best Buy Business Review

Posted on Thursday 9 February 2012

Best Buy – The name defies its inherent meaning. Great deals doesn’t always mean great service, and I found out the hard way when my own little Internet Rat Race was threatened by my trust in this large chain of stores. I like to consider myself a contemporary, educated Internet User. As a rule, the description fits. So when my little empire of blogs, retail websites, traffic exchanges and paid-to-click sites were threatened by the dead computer sitting on my desk, my answer was to find a store that had a great computer at a good price that I would pick up, set up and be working two hours later.

I visited many stores including Circuit City and Best Buy Online. Normally, I am a tried and true, faithful customer to Circuit City. However, this great deal was calling my name from Best Buy, the computer was in stock at our local store and so I ordered it. I waited for my confirmation e-mail, printed it out and headed off to drive 45 minutes with gas prices of almost $4 a gallon to get my new toy. $800 dollars later, including round trip gas fees and my new computer bundle, I sat down excitedly to set up my new computer and get back to work!

Safe Internet Browsing with Mozilla Firefox and Avast! Antivirus Home

Posted on Tuesday 7 February 2012

With everyone so hyped up about the conficker or conflicker or whatever its called virus, I’m here to tell you that not once have I encountered it or any other virus on my computer. This is because I browse safely. First, I use the Mozilla Firefox web browser, which can be gotten here from Mozilla’s homepage, and a really neat little add-on called Adblock Plus, which can be added to Firefox after installing, here from the Mozilla add-on site. Firefox does all the things that Internet firefox download mozilla
Explorer does, except faster and more securely, and then add-ons like Adblock let you customize the browser to do pretty much anything you want. If you don’t believe my say so, just go to this CNET review here and see for yourself how it competes with other major browsers.

The reason I use the Adblock add-on is because many viruses infect computers after the user has clicked on a banner ad or sidebar ad on a questionable site (which you shouldn’t be on in the first place, which will be discussed next). Sadly, even reputable sites may accidentally link to a site which may infect your computer, which is another reason for using the Adblock add-on. What it does is simply not display CSS and HTML (website code) that conforms to a list of known ad-serving techniques. There is also an extension for this add-on called the Element Hiding Helper, which lets you block text ads on pages such as Google search or Facebook. You do this by simply clicking on the Adblock dropdown in the top right corner of the browser, then clicking on “Select Element to hide,” and then clicking on the text that is an ad and adding it to the list of things that Adblock will keep from showing on your browser. The Element Hiding Helper can be gotten from the add-on site again, here.

How to Choose a Digital Picture Frame

Posted on Sunday 5 February 2012

Digital picture frames are very popular these days. With more and more people keeping their photos on memory cards instead of albums, the digital picture frame is a great way to display your favorite pictures. Since you can store multiple pictures in one frame, it can also cut down on the clutter associated with displaying many pictures in a small space. Here are some things to look at when making that first digital picture frame purchase.

Check for the internal memory. Many digital frames do not have much internal memory, and depending on how many megapixels your photos are, they may not hold many of your pictures. This is not really a problem, as most of them are also compatible with memory cards. It is easier to buy these items at the same time to save disappointment when you go to set up your picture frame.

Frame size is important. If you have taken pictures with a lower megapixel camera, you may not want to display them on an 8 by 10 picture frame, as digital picture frame
the picture quality may not be that great. The larger the picture frame you choose, the better your picture quality needs to be.

Choose a power source that works for you. Some picture frames run on electricity, which means they need to be plugged in, thereby limiting your options for placement in our home. There are many models that require batteries, which makes placing your frame easier. Unless you are willing to change batteries frequently, this may be a concern for you as well. Weigh the options and get the solution that presents the fewest hassles for you.

Why the Nook Color is the Best Android Tablet

Posted on Saturday 4 February 2012

When Apple first released the iPad, the tablet wars begun. Companies like Motorola and Samsung were the few notable tablet producers. Unfortunately, the iPad and tablets alike come with a hefty price tag. Most tablets range from $500 to as much as $800, but don’t let that discourage you. Thanks to Barnes & Noble, you can now get an Android tablet for only $249! Your probably thinking this is some kind of cheap and unreliable tablet, think again!

The Nook Color boasts a sharp 7″ screen. With a contrast ratio of 909:1, it has better screen resolution than the iPad. It’s processors are not very powerful, clocked at a mere 800MHz which compared to the iPad under-performs by about 200MHz.Unfortunately their is no 3G support, only WiFi, but it does support Flash, unlike the iPad. It has a very responsive touch screen that is also multi-touch so you can pinch-to-zoom.

Rooting your Nook Color can provide you with promising tweaks. You can stably overclock the processor to 1.2GHz, doing so may also increase the 8 hour battery life to about 11 hours. It also gives you the full version of the Android Market and other Android features, making it a full Android tablet at half the price! Beware though, if you are not tech-savvy you could potentially screw up your Nook Color and rooting the Nook would void your warranty. It has 8GB of internal memory and a SD card slot that is capable of holding 32GB. It’s main frame is made out of aluminum with a dark gray coating.

The Nook Color does have its downsides though, it is quite heavy for its relatively small size. If your main use is to read books and magazines, then i suggest buying another eReader with an e-Ink display because the Nook Colors LCD display could be harsh on the eyes. The battery life barely meets the standards for an eReader but then again it’s more than an eReader, but less than a tablet (unless you root it of course).

In conclusion, the Nook Color is a great device that can be the best alternative to most tablets, if tweaked. It comes with an attractive price nook color
tag as well as design. It is not the best when it comes to battery life and weight but it is bearable. I was disappointed with the limited version of Android Froyo, but then again that is easily overseen. Once rooted it becomes the perfect Android tablet with the not perfect price of an Android tablet. Barnes & Noble did a nice job with this tablet/eReader. I strongly recommend purchasing this device!

A Brief Guide to Visiting the Alamo and San Antonio

Posted on Friday 3 February 2012

Hailing from the Midwest, I knew little about San Antonio, Texas, and its famous shrine, the Alamo. An avid history buff, I was eager to find out more. I quickly learned the Alamo represents just one small part of this energetic city.

The somber reality of the events at the Alamo didn’t strike me until I saw the IMAX movie Price of Freedom at Rivercenter Mall. We had previously visited the shrine just down the street, that rather plain, stone edifice seen in countless photos.

However, with all of the tour buses and surrounding modern structures, I had trouble visualizing the scene where 189 men died. The well-versed tour guide recounted the important details and we all nodded at the appropriate times, but the impact was minimal.

Not so at the IMAX. The 13-day siege between the Texans and the Mexican troops of Santa Ana becomes all too real on the giant screen. Seeing the story played out with historical accuracy created a strong emotional bond between the audience and the chief characters. When Davy Crockett met his fate, fighting to the end for his convictions, tears welled in my eyes and a lump, big as a goose egg, lodged in my throat. When the final credits began, the crowded theater was absolutely silent – even the youngest children sat quietly.

It was just like watching the latest Titanic movie. You already know how it’s going to end, and it’s not happy. But you realize you should see it to truly understand the meaning of bravery and sacrifice. If you venture to the place they call the Cradle of Texas Liberty, don’t miss the IMAX movie, as it adds enormously to the Alamo experience.

One of the most-visited sites after the Alamo is the famous River Walk.

This winding waterway is situated below street level and should be on your must-see list. With colorful outdoor umbrellas, a number of attractive stone bridges and old-growth trees framing the scene, it is enchanting. Slow-moving boats filled with passengers meander through the area.

Also at the Rivercenter Mall, on the lower level, you can get tickets and board one of the sightseeing boats. On the busy Sunday afternoon with the temperature at a lovely 80 degrees, we had a short wait of about 20 minutes before stepping aboard. Our guide joked and laughed his way through the 40-minute excursion, pointing out significant landmarks along the two-and-a-half mile waterway.

Delicious aromas wafting from the restaurants along the River Walk will tempt you into trying real Southwestern cuisine. Boudro’s or the Zuni Grill are two good options. Just be sure you have plenty of water to wash down those spicy hot peppers.

If you’re interested in Spanish colonial architecture, save half a day to visit the missions. In addition to the Alamo, which was the first mission, San Antonio has four others that lie along the Mission Trail. We were able to see three of the missions in just over two hours.

Although they had Apache and Comanche raiders to contend with, the missions reached their peak between 1747 and 1775 and were the basis for the modern city of San Antonio. It’s best to make your first stop Mission San Jose – the “Queen of the Mission” – where you’ll find the visitor center. The short movie provides historical information about the missions’ functions.

Except for the Alamo, all the missions continue as parish churches today. Mission San Jose hosts numerous weddings throughout the year. When we arrived, an outdoor photography session was in full swing, with a young bride posing in full regalia. The weathered stone made an excellent backdrop and was a striking contrast to her immaculate white dress. Cameras in hand, we left our guide in mid-sentence to take advantage of the unusual photo opportunity.

Another stop was the Institute of Texan Cultures, now operated by the University of Texas at San Antonio. The area claims a remarkable 27 different ethnic and cultural groups. Exhibits give background details on each group. Our group had no idea the Lone Star State was peopled with Germans, Japanese, Poles, Lebanese, Irish and so many others. Each summer, that diversity is celebrated at the Texas Folklife Festival.

A visitor to San Antonio isn’t likely to run out of attractions. In fact, you could easily fill a week. The toughest part is narrowing down the list. Other museums of note are the Cowboy Museum, Hertzberg Circus Museum and the San Antonio Art Museum.

If you prefer to stay downtown, there are plenty of fine lodging options. The Plaza San Antonio, operated by Marriott, is a peaceful, lush oasis. The hotel incorporated several historic structures within its grounds, which is now used as meeting space and a fitness center. The staff is first-rate and will cater to your every need.

Mother Nature has been especially kind to San Antonio, blessing her with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 70 degrees. Outdoor pursuits are toyota Repair san antonio, lexus repair san antonio, honda repair san antonio, acura repair san antonio, infinity repair san antonio, mazda repair san antonio, toyota repair, honda repair, acura repair popular – if you’re a golfer you can pick from more than 30 courses. A word of caution, though: Mid to late summer temperatures can be very hot.
